Ray Parlour has claimed that Brendan Rodgers will be ‘absolutely delighted’ that he is the ‘favourite’ for the Newcastle United job, as he told talkSPORT (13/10/21 at 7:45 am).

Steve Bruce is still in the Newcastle dugout, but it’s likely that he will be given the chop by the club’s new owners.

Ever since the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) took charge of proceedings, players and managers have been touted to make the move to St James’ Park, left, right and centre.

The Newcastle owners will want to make that early statement, as they try to get their feet under the table, and more than likely, it will come via the man they appoint in their dugout.

Parlour thinks Rodgers will be loving the links to the Newcastle job, but not because he wants to take the role in the North East.

“I think Brendan Rodgers will be absolutely delighted that he is the favourite,” said Parlour.

“What he does now is that he uses his agent or his representatives, who go straight to Leicester and he will probably get a new deal. He will do.

“It’s about saying to Leicester ‘I am being linked’. If you are playing football, and are being linked to other clubs, and you say ‘no I want to stay’. You will get a new deal, if they want to keep you.

“I think Brendan will probably use that.”

It would be pretty tough to lure Rodgers out of Leicester because he is comfortable in the hotseat and a popular member with the owners and the supporters.

They may have started the season in an indifferent fashion, but they are still in Europe and they will be backing themselves to get into Europe again.

But, at the end of the day, if the Magpies are to attract that big-name or surprise manager, then it’s how they sell their project that will play a part in how things pan out.

Rodgers has overachieved at the King Power, including helping the club win the FA Cup last season.

But constantly failing to get over that Champions League line is one thing that has been hurting the Northern Irishman.
