The former midfielder does, however, believe that Roberto di Matteo should have been given more time at Aston Villa.
Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo and assistant manager Steve Clarke before the match
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Up Front podcast, Ray Parlour has backed Steve Clarke for the vacant Aston Villa job.
The Villans are currently looking for their fourth manager in less than a year after sacking Roberto di Matteo five days ago.
The Italian left Villa Park after just 12 games in charge, with only the one win to his name and the club sitting two points outside of the Championship’s relegation zone.
Reading Manager Steve Clarke
A number of names have been linked with the role since his departure, although owner Tony Xia claims they have brought the shortlist down to three potential candidates.
The leading candidates are Steve Bruce and current caretaker manager Steve Clarke according to the Sun but Parlour believes the latter could be ideal.
“I think Steve Clarke could do a good job,” he told Alan Brazil Upfront.
“He’s got the experience [and] he’s managed in the Premier League so maybe it’s an opportunity for Steve to get back at a massive club like Aston Villa.”
“I still think Di Matteo should have got a little bit more time. He was so close to getting some really good results.”
Hull manager Steve Bruce before the match
While Parlour believes Clarke could be a smart appointment, Steve Bruce would arguably be the wisest choice.
He has a strong history in the Championship, having led several clubs, most recently Hull City, to the Premier League.
The only negative for him is the fact he has managed rivals Birmingham City in the past, something that did not work out well for Alex McLeish when he was appointed by the previous regime.
