According to a report from the Daily Record, Rangers target Rashid Sumaila is under contract with his club in Kuwait for three more years, potentially putting his hopes of moving to Ibrox in jeopardy.

The report states that Gers boss Pedro Caixinha is keen to bring the 24-year-old to Scotland, and that it had earlier been suggested that he could complete a free transfer to Ibrox this summer.

The problem is, Qadsia SC have since confirmed they tied the player to a new long-term contract prior to his loan move to Al-Gharafa, meaning that Rangers may have to dig relatively deep to convince them to part company with a player Caixinha knows well.

With veteran centre-back Clint Hill leaving Rangers at the end of the current campaign, and doubts remaining regarding both Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan, the Gers have work to do to strengthen a key area of the field.

The addition of Sumaila would be a good start. However, with the Daily Record now reporting that the ball is firmly in Qadsia SC’s court, only time will tell if Caixina is left disappointed in this particular pursuit.

Rangers have time to get things right, with the whole season to make quality additions in a bid to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership next season and beyond.

Sumaila is a Ghana international who fits the model of the kind of talented, young player Rangers need to take them forward.
