Liverpool fans were delighted on Twitter after their former player Martin Skrtel helped cause a shock in the Champions League when Istanbul Basaksehir beat Manchester United 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The 35-year-old, who was sold by the Reds in 2016, started at the heart of the defence for Istanbul Basaksehir, as a number of former Premier League names – Rafael, Demba Ba and Skrtel himself also featured in the match.

Former Newcastle and Chelsea man Ba opened the scoring on the night and Anthony Martial’s header ended up being just a consolation.

Liverpool fans loved how their former old school centre-back held his own against this struggling Man United side.

Some pointed out how he did a job against the likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

One crazy stat even emerged after the first 45 minutes, which showed that Skrtel made more tackles (4) during that first-half period than any other player and no opposition player dribbled past him [Squawka].

That statistic stood out for the Anfield faithful, who in the end, were just pleased that their former player did a job against their rivals.
