Marcus Rashford told ITV Sport that Tottenham striker, Harry Kane, is the one who could ‘re-create’ Paul Gascoigne’s famous Euro 1996 goal for England against Scotland.
The Manchester United player highlighted the Tottenham hitman’s finishing ability as a reason why he’s the ‘most likely’ to achieving that from those in the current England squad.
Whilst most would pick the obvious candidates – Jack Grealish or Phil Foden – because their styles are similar to the Three Lions hero, especially Aston Villa’s expert ball-carrier.
Rashford thought otherwise, and when watching Gazza’s famous goal back with ITV ahead of England v Scotland this Friday at Wembley, it was Kane’s name that he put forward.
“It’s a flick around the corner,” said Rashford when describing the goal. “Straight in behind and a Gascoigne over the head volley.
“Massive moment. Everyone knows the skills that this man had.
On who is the most likely to re-create that: “Most likely to re-create this goal? Oooh, I would probably say Kane just because of the finish.”
Well, this is a chance for the England players to make themselves heroes and write their names into the history books, just like Gazza did 25 years ago.
Three points at Wembley against the old enemy then England should, more than likely, book their place into the knockout stages of Euro 2020.
Foden started the opening win against Croatia, but he had a fairly quiet game, so it will be interesting if Grealish is brought into the fold.
