Well respected German football expert Raphael Honigstein provided an update regarding Liverpool’s reported pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, when speaking exclusively to ESPN, and suggested that signing the 22-year-old might not be Jürgen Klopp’s priority.

German publication Sport Bild claimed earlier this month that the Reds were interested in bringing the Germany international to Anfield either this month or during the summer.

Werner’s current deal with Leipzig is set to expire in the summer of 2020, but according to Bild, the Bundesliga outfit are desperate to tie him down to a new contract that would include a €70 million (£61 million) buy-out clause.

The 22-year-old is a real talent, and he would undoubtedly be an asset for whichever club wins the race for his signature, but whether Liverpool really need another forward or not is debatable.

Honigstein suggested that the Merseyside outfit may very well be looking elsewhere over the next six months, when speaking exclusively to ESPN, with defensive reinforcements thought to be Klopp’s top priority:

“The 22-year-old has yet to decide whether he wants to stay at RB Leipzig. Leipzig have recently extended a deadline for him to make up his mind. They are working on the assumption that LFC are firmly among his admirers. If Werner does indeed turn down an offer to extend, the Bundesliga club are determined to sell him this summer. Klopp’s insistence that the squad is now “complete” would suggest that a fourth transition-type forward might not be a priority right now. LFC are probably more interested in bringing in a versatile centre-back with the ability to deputise in wide areas.”

With just two days remaining until the transfer window slams shut, Liverpool will have to act fast if they want to bring in any new players this month, although it does seem more likely that there will not be anymore transfer activity at Anfield until the summer.
