Everton splashed owner Farhad Moshiri’s money in the summer on an influx of new signings.
It has turned out to be somewhat of a failure in the summer transfer window for Everton last summer. Big money equals big expectation, and the Toffees’ summer signings have simply not been able to match fans’ requirements.
Despite signs of resurgence under new manager Sam Allardyce, a number of Ronald Koeman’s recruits are still performing way below the quality that the astronomical transfer fees would suggest. Here, we rank Everton’s summer signings at the halfway stage.
9 – Davy Klaassen
At such a large fee, twinned with the expectation and Fenerbahce now reportedly eyeing him on loan – Klaassen has simply been a failure so far. The £25million man could be offloaded in January, if he cannot show Allardyce what he is capable of.
8 – Sandro Ramirez
Signed from Malaga in the summer, Spaniard Ramirez was regarded as the possible replacement to Romelu Lukaku. But he has not adapted to the rigours of the Premier League and like Klaassen, could be off in January.
7 – Michael Keane
The England international signed for the Toffees from Burnley, but injury has got in the way of his playing time. When playing, Keane was unable to stop Everton from struggling and has been displaced by the partnership of Ashley Williams and Mason Holgate. At £25million, he has been somewhat of a flop so far.
6 – Nikola Vlasic
Impressive under Koeman, the Croatian youngster was seemingly ostracised by interim manager David Unsworth and has now lost his place in the side to Aaron Lennon. At 20 years of age, though, he has time to improve.
5 – Henry Onyekuru
Signed and immediately loaned to Anderlecht, the attacking speed machine has scored 10 goals in 27 games. Although he is facing lesser opponents from the Belgian Pro League, the youngster is showing plenty of quality to justify his fee.
4 – Gylfi Sigurdsson
There is no doubt that Iceland international Sigurdsson has huge, huge quality proven in the Premier League. He has shown such quality in glimpses so far, and shown slight improvement under Allardyce. Could still become an Everton icon.
3 – Cuco Martina
Signed on a free, the versatile defender was supposed to be just a back-up signing. However, he has proved to be more than just a squad player, with his performance against Merseyside rivals Liverpool earning the plaudits of fans.
2 – Jordan Pickford
Starring in between the sticks, the £30million signing from Sunderland has starred for Everton. His shot-stopping abilities and inch-perfect distribution surely now must see him overtake Joe Hart and Jack Butland for the England number one jersey?
1 – Wayne Rooney
His move back home has worked wonders, for both Rooney and Everton. Scoring goals, providing the heartbeat in his side’s attack and showing the passion and determination previously missing, Rooney has been one of the summer signings of the Premier League season.
