The Leicester City manager believes the champions will need a lower total than the Arsenal boss claims.

Quoted by the London Evening Standard, Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has disagreed with Arsene Wenger’s claims that 82-86 points will win the title this season.

Speaking at Arsenal’s recent AGM, the Gunners boss predicted the tally that this year’s champions would accrue to walk away with the title.

A look at the stats by Sky Sports revealed he was not unwise is his claims, with 86 points having been the average haul need by the last 24 champions.

Of course, Ranieri’s Foxes didn’t reach that tally last year, as they ended up with Champions having picked up 81 points.

And Ranieri believes it will take a total lower than the one Wenger believes for the title winners.

“This season I think there are so many teams fighting for the title. When there are so many teams maybe the total can go down,” the London Evening Standard quotes him saying.

“He’s an expert on the Premier League, if Arsene says 86 he’s right. I believe a little less but he’s a boss.

“He has more experience no, 20 years. Me only five… There are so many teams who are fighting for the title, there will be a very good battle until the end.”

It will certainly be interesting to see how many points teams need to win the title this season, with it looking likely to be a race that will run to the wire.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City appear to be the frontrunners, with all three currently top of the table with 20 points to their name.

Given that 82-86 points is the average tally that the last 24 winners have accrued, it would not be surprising to see one of those names on the trophy at the end of the campaign.

With Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur potentially even Manchester United all fancying their chances too, though, it could be a title race that will take some time to decide.
