Murty was replaced by Steven Gerrard as manager of Rangers after seven months in interim charge at Ibrox.

Graeme Murty has revealed he wants to see Rangers’ young players struggle.

Murty, who stepped in as Rangers manager for the bulk of last season, has returned to his role as youth team coach at Ibrox.

On Wednesday, the former Scotland international took a Gers XI – which contained no recognised first team players – to Larne in Northern Ireland for a friendly.

After the game – a 2-1 win for Larne – Rangers’ players were due to meet with members of a local supporters group.

But Murty told the County Antrim side’s official Youtube channel he has no concerns over how the defeat may affect his team.

“I’ll take this group of players anywhere,” he said. “I’m really proud of how they conduct themselves as mature young men. They deal with that expectation and they uphold the standards of our club fantastically well.

“What they’re going to have to deal with today are disappointed fans, which is a first for them. They’ve dealt with disappointed parents and disappointed coaches, but now they have to deal with disappointed fans and still go and maintain that standard and still conduct themselves with the humility and the grace that we expect from them.

“So this is the next part of their challenge, which is good for us, and I can’t wait to see some of them crumble actually. I want to see them struggle.

“All we do is try to get them a safe amount of struggle that gets them out of their comfort zone – I thought you saw a few people out of their comfort zone tonight, but that is not terminal to their careers, it’s not terminal to their lives. It’s just a bit of a challenge and we support them throughout those challenges.

“We just want to make sure they get a broad range of them so that they can actually grow in lots of different ways.”

Rangers went 2-0 down in Larne, but came to life towards the end of the game, spurning chances to equalise after Joshua McPake’s goal had halved the deficit.

Glenn Middleton and Stephen Kelly are two of the most recent additions to Steven Gerrard’s first team at Ibrox, having impressed at youth level.
