Serge Atakayi has posted an encouraging injury update on Instagram as the Rangers youngster continues his recovery from an operation he underwent in November.

The 20-year-old made his Rangers debut in the 7-1 win over Motherwell at Ibrox, coming on in the 73rd minute of the match as the latest of a string of youngsters being given a chance by Steven Gerrard.

The fleet-footed attacker had impressed in Graeme Murty’s Under-20 side, but his debut ended on a bad note with the Finland Under-19 international picking up a somewhat serious injury- though the specific problem remains unclear.

It forced the youngster to undergo surgery in London almost three months ago, after he left Ibrox in a brace. The attacker posted an update on Instagram, claiming he is close to a recovery.

Born in DR Congo and speaking in his native French, Atakayi’s post is translated as: “It’s not at all far, it’s soon even.”

The Gers have plenty of options out wide in Gerrard’s senior side, in the form of on-fire Ryan Kent, Daniel Candeias, Glenn Middleton, Eros Grezda and even Jamie Murphy, though the latter is also recovering from a long-term knee problem.

It remains to be seen when Atakayi will return from his injury, and whether he will be given another chance in the first team as the business end of the season approaches.
