With Rangers expected to have a smaller transfer budget than rivals Celtic this summer, overhauling their rivals will be tougher than ever.

This will leave potential manager Pedro Caixinha needing to look at alternative solutions, and fortunately they have a blossoming academy.

Liam Burt is the jewel in the crown, and he posted a reminder of his talent this week for the under-20 side.

Burt netted twice in a 3-0 win over St Johnstone, and provided an assist for their other goal.

He was given a brief appearance by Mark Warburton last season, but the former boss did not promote him this season with the club back in the top flight.

Burt should be targeting a breakthrough to the first team as a regular in 2017/18, starting by making his case in pre-season.

If he can catch Caixinha’s eye earlier, he will be better for it, and the manager should keep an open mind.

Burt has the potential to save Rangers millions in the transfer market if he can make a successful transition to first team football, and they should do everything they can to ensure he gets the opportunities.
