Rangers are eyeing a bold swoop for Paris Saint-Germain talent Xavi Simons – and Ronald de Boer believes he should be looking to move on.
Just weeks after Giovanni van Bronckhorst was appointed as Rangers boss, the Gers were linked with a stunning move.
Spanish newspaper AS reported that Rangers were ready to rival Barcelona for the signing of Simons.
It was claimed that Rangers believed the lure of playing for compatriot Van Bronckhorst would help win the battle.
Contact was allegedly made with agent Mino Raiola, with Rangers able to offer a starring first-team role to Simons.
Out of contract in the summer, Simons could leave PSG and chase playing time away from the French capital.
Simons has long been talked up as a star of the future, and left the Barcelona ranks for PSG back in 2019.
The talented midfielder has only played five times for PSG’s first team, and that’s a problem for fellow Dutchman De Boer.
De Boer knows all about life at Rangers having joined the club in 2000, making more than 120 appearances for the Gers before leaving in 2004.
De Boer has now been speaking about Simons, no doubt knowing that his old pal Van Bronckhorst is keen.

As quoted by Voetbal Zone, De Boer suggested that the pressure on Simons to be ‘exceptional’ in order to be in the PSG first team is just too much.
De Boer believes that Simons simply isn’t going to get the playing time he needs and now needs to move on.
The former Rangers man even recommended Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord for Simons, urging them to battle the Gers.
“I really think he has suddenly become a man, a guy,” said De Boer. “Before that he was really frivolous and very timid, really a youth player. He’s so young and that’s the problem at Paris Saint-Germain. Then you have to be as exceptional as Kylian Mbappé for example. He just has to start making flying hours, but is he going to do that? Chances are he won’t get that at Paris.”
“A Dutch club would be nice for him, Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord. Top three, otherwise I think there are other clubs that would like to have him,” he added.
This was always going to be a tricky chase for Rangers given Simons’ reputation as a wonderkid, but at least a former Gers man is urging him to make a transfer later this year.
