Rangers were interested in Xavi Simons but the talented midfielder instead looks set to sign a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Gers have yet to really get moving n the summer transfer market but do have John Souttar arriving on a free transfer from Hearts.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs major reinforcements this summer, especially as Rangers have struggled to improve their starting XI in recent windows.

Quality signings are a must but you can now seemingly cross Simons off the list of potential Rangers additions this summer.

Rangers were interested in Xavi Simons

Van Bronckhorst may be tempted to dip into the Dutch market given his knowledge of players in or from his homeland.

Reports in December from Spanish newspaper AS claimed that Rangers wanted to pull off a stunning coup for PSG talent Xavi Simons.

It was suggested that Rangers had made contact with agent Mino Raiola in the hope of a bargain deal.

Simons is out of contract at the end of the month and Rangers were seemingly interested in a move to bring the teenager to Ibrox.

Simons, 19, has long been tipped as a wonderkid having shown promise in the Barcelona ranks before his 2019 move to Paris.

The diminutive, technically-gifted midfielder has been given seven league appearances for PSG and it’s clear that they rate him highly, but this contract issue has been hanging over his development.

Fabrizio Romano has now taken to Twitter to claim that PSG are on the verge of securing a new deal for Simons, ruling out a move to Rangers once and for all.

The plan is then for PSG to loan Simons back to his native Netherlands, handing him playing time with PSV Eindhoven.

This was always something of a pipe dream signing for Rangers, and if Van Bronckhorst had any plans of bringing Simons to Glasgow, he will now have to move on to another target.
