Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in bringing Mirko Maric to Ibrox this summer.

It may have surprised some Rangers fans when the Daily Record reported this week that the Gers are interested in signing Mirko Maric having scouted the striker regularly over the last few months.

Maric has enjoyed a brilliant season, scoring 16 goals. But the Light Blues have not got the best track record when it comes to signing players from his current club Osijek.

Borna Barisic has shown some potential, but given that he is a natural left-back, he should have left both Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan well behind in the pecking order. But he has so far been unable to.

Meanwhile, Eros Grezda has endured an even more disappointing campaign. He has been injured for much of the season, and has struggled to make an impact when he has been available to Steven Gerrard.

The Evening Times recently suggested that both men are facing the axe this summer, and it was telling that Gerrard left both men out of the matchday squad for Sunday’s win against Aberdeen.

Rangers’ lack of genuine left-back options hints that there may still be a chance for Barisic. But with Gerrard having several wide men available to him, it looks a much more difficult task for Grezda to turn his situation around.

And thus, if Rangers are determined to make a move for Maric and are confident that it will be third time lucky when it comes from signing players from Osijek, perhaps they should offer the club the chance to take Grezda back to sweeten the deal.

Eros Grezda of Rangers looks on during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League between Celtic and at Ibrox Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Daily Record reports that Maric is valued at around £3 million. That kind of fee would add to the pressure on the striker, so including the £2 million signing (via Daily Record) in the deal could take some of that pressure off.

If Rangers do want to offload Grezda, it is not going to be an easy task given the year he has had in Scotland coupled with the fee that they paid. But perhaps including the winger in any bid for Maric could be the best way to solve two issues with one move.

Unfortunately, it appears that that could well end up being the best thing that Grezda has done for Rangers.
