‘Rangers were suffering’: Gerrard interestingly shares what he told Gers players in first meeting

Steven Gerrard has shared with the High Performance Podcast that he told his Rangers players in his first meeting with them that he wasn’t addressing them as ‘Steven Gerrard the player’.

The Liverpool legend also stated that he had prepared what he was going to say to the players for a ‘few weeks’.

It has been two years since Gerrard put up his boots and picked up his clipboard for the highly-pressured job of management. And he couldn’t have picked a bigger pressure cooker than the one in Glasgow.

For most of those Rangers players, they would have been in awe at seeing such a legendary figure stand before them at Ibrox, as the former midfielder shared what was said in that first meeting.

“I remember addressing the team and the squad for the first time,” said Gerrard. “I had a few days and weeks to prepare for what I was going to say in that meeting.

“But the key thing for me was to let them know that I am not standing here addressing you as Steven Gerrard the player. I am not going to think I am this person because I have had a decent football career.

“This is me, here to try and help and support you. To try and improve you as a group. To try and use my experiences, my knowledge and my team of people, who I have worked ever so hard to get around me.

“And we as a group are going to try and help you. We are there for you. We will do everything we can and we will sacrifice everything we can for you individually and collectively to get you in a better place because, at the time, Rangers were suffering.”

Gerrard is yet to lift any silverware at Rangers and it’s fair to say that this is the season he has to deliver for the club.

Those at Ibrox have been patient with the Englishman and all those years of hard work are seemingly paying off given how they have started the season both in the Premiership and in Europe.

But there is a long way to go and if Gerrard can stop the 10 from happening then it’s not only those on Merseyside who will be idolising him.
