Norwich City will sell Russell Martin to Rangers in the January transfer window – though Old Firm rivals Celtic need a centre-back too.
Considering that Norwich City are sitting 15th in the Championship having lost 10 of their 24 league games so far this season, you’d think they would not be so quick to bid farewell to their longest serving player and their inspirational captain.
Nonetheless, the Daily Record reports that The Canaries are indeed willing to sell Russell Martin in the January transfer window after seven years of loyal service and over 300 appearances for the club.
Understandably, there is interest in the Scotland international who, at the age of 31, still has a lot to offer. Rangers have made Martin one of their top targets in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Record, and it is understood that he would jump at the chance to reignite his career at Ibrox.
But Rangers are not the only Old Firm club who could do with an experienced centre-half.
Celtic have made defensive reinforcements their top priority in the January window and despite landing 32-year-old Marvin Compper from RB Leipzig, the BBC reports that manager Brendan Rodgers would like to see another option arrive at Parkhead next month.
So Martin, who knows much of the Celtic squad from his time with the Scottish national team, should come under consideration with Norwich aiming to find a buyer.
Like Compper, the former Peterborough United man may not be a long-term solution but his leadership qualities and ability to fill in at right-back when required means he would be a valuable addition both on and off the pitch.
And he’d hardly cost an arm and a leg either.
