Rangers want Jordan Jones… but could he be Patrick Roberts’ Celtic successor?

Jordan Jones has shone for Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership and has piqued the interest of Rangers – but Old Firm rivals Celtic should move too.

Lewis Morgan may be one of the most talented youngsters in Scottish football but it must be remembered that he is yet to prove himself in the first division.

The 21-year-old has scored ten goals for second tier St Mirren this season – but who is to say whether or not he will make the grade if he makes that giant step up to Celtic, with the Scottish Sun claiming the Champions are leading the chase for his signature.

So if Celtic want a left winger, perhaps they would be better off signing a player who has shown beyond doubt that he belongs at the top level.

Since moving to Kilmarnock from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2016, Jordan Jones has emerged as one of the most exciting players in the Premiership. Adding creativity and skill on the left of Killie’s attack, Jones has been rewarded for his fine form with a debut for the senior Northern Ireland side this year.

And the 23-year-old appears to be exactly the kind of player compatriot, and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, tends to get the best out of.

Instead, however, it is Old Firm rivals Rangers who have made a move. According to the Sunday Post, director of football Mark Allen is drawing up January targets and Jones is right at the top of the list.

Rangers are still looking for a left winger and, after interest in Jamie Murphy and former youth teamer Morgan came to nothing, it appears that the have turned to Jones.

But would the left winger be better off at Celtic? First team football wouldn’t be easy to come by but Rodgers is one of the best around when it comes to helping young players realise their potential.

And with Patrick Roberts’ loan spell from Manchester City set to come to an end in the summer, Celtic need a long-term successor. Perhaps they should take a punt on Jones, who showed Celtic just how good he can be with an equalising goal against them in October’s 1-1 draw at Parkhead.
