Rangers veteran Steven Davis is certain that Gers midfielder Stephen Kelly has a “big career ahead of him” as he encouraged the Ibrox midfielder to “keep doing what he’s doing” as he pushes for a first-team spot at Ibrox.
Kelly was on the bench for last night’s Europa League clash with Alashkert and has been on the fringes of the Rangers side after impressing while out on loan at Ayr United and Ross County in recent seasons.
Davis has been blown away by the Scotland under-21 star since his return for pre-season, with fans even tipping him as an eventual replacement for the Ulsterman.
“Stephen went out and got himself some valuable experience last year, which has done him the world of good, and has come back for pre-season and looked very good from the very first day,” Davis said.
“I really like Stevie as a player. He’s very comfortable on the ball in any situation and I think he’s got a big career ahead of him.
“He just needs to keep doing what he’s doing and wait for those opportunities to come and then grab them.”
With midfield being one of the toughest areas of the side to get into, Kelly will have to be patient as he tries to push into the side.
The prospect of getting appearances from the bench and some cup games will give him a chance to stake his long-term claim for a place.
