Rangers have appointed Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new boss – and Pep Guardiola has offered his support for the move.
Rangers lost Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa last week and had to move quickly over the international break to replace him.
The Gers were linked with a number of managers but unsurprisingly went for Van Bronckhorst.
The Dutchman played for Rangers between 1998 and 2001 and is still loved by fans at Ibrox.
Add in that Van Bronckhorst won a league title and two domestic cups at Feyenoord whilst managing in the Champions League as well as the Europa League, and you can see why Rangers like him.
Van Bronckhorst will not take charge against Hibernian today, but should be in the dugout at Ibrox against Sparta Prague on Thursday.
Many believe this is a great appointment for Rangers, and Guardiola absolutely thinks so too.
Van Bronckhorst briefly shadowed Guardiola at Manchester City after leaving Feyenoord, meaning the pair have a bond.
As quoted by Football365, Guardiola suggested that the move is a ‘big compliment’ to Van Bronckhorst as a coach.
Guardiola added that Rangers is ‘one of the greatest’ clubs in Scotland, wishing Van Bronckhorst all the best in his new role.
“Big compliment to him. Rangers is one of the greatest in Scotland,” said Van Bronckhorst.
“It’s a huge opportunity for him. We are in touch and he came for a period here. He is a lovely guy, so I wish him all the best,” he added.
