Rangers have confirmed the signing of Todd Cantwell on a ‘long-term deal’ as Michael Beale’s first signing at Ibrox – and the addition has seen Chris Sutton’s 2020 Tweet on Cantwell resurface, coming back to haunt the Celtic legend.

Sutton, of course, comes from Norwich. The team in which he started his career, clocking up 43 goals in 127 senior games. Later on, Sutton moved to Celtic and won eight titles. A runner-up in the 2003 UEFA Cup, and a big Celtic fan.

Not only a Celtic fan, but a Norwich one too, then. Back in 2020, he interviewed England U21 midfielder Cantwell for the Pink Un. Fast forward three years, Cantwell has fallen by the wayside at Norwich City – and has joined Rangers.

The new no.13 at Ibrox has penned a long-term deal for a fee that is believed to be worth £1.5m. After his chat with Cantwell, Sutton said the playmaker is “going places”. He said the then-Norwich man is “intelligent” and “articulate”.

Rangers signing Cantwell sees Sutton’s 2020 Tweet haunt Celtic legend

Cantwell is a massive signing for Rangers. A real signal of intent from Rangers, a signal that they are going to back the new Ibrox manager. Beale has delivered so far, winning eight of his nine games – and drawing the other, against Celtic.

The talented English attacking midfielder has sparkled down south. But relegation to the Championship has hampered his form. He needs a new stage – and now has that at a massive club in Rangers. It certainly sees Sutton eat his words.

Can Rangers and Cantwell work in tandem to bring success to Ibrox? Without a doubt. But it is about unlocking the form that saw him linked with Spurs during his Premier League spell, and he will be a special player for Beale’s side.
