The Herald claim Rangers talent Josh McPake is set to leave Ibrox permanently after a succession of loan spells away from the club – with an English club moving to sign McPake, who is currently out on loan in the Scottish Championship.

The 21-year-old is closing on a permanent move down south, to join Chesterfield. Paul Cook’s side are currently in the mix for promotion back to League Two, sitting in third. McPake is currently enjoying his best loan away from Rangers.

McPake, who is on loan for the sixth time while on the books at Ibrox after loan spells with Dundee, Morton, Tranmere, Harrogate Town and Morecambe – is currently at Championship side Queen’s Park. He has played 22 times this term.

Mostly from the right wing, he has had a hand in six goals – scoring four, laying on two assists. He is on loan until the end of the season – but a permanent move to Chesterfield is on the horizon. It means his loan is due to be cancelled.

Rangers talent McPake set to leave Ibrox permanently, for Chesterfield

While McPake is clearly not going to have a future at Rangers and his loan spells have been for the purpose of putting him in the window – is a move to the National League really the right one? He is a talent, making a Rangers debut.

He has scored goals in the division higher than the National League, in League Two. He has also made an impact this season for Queen’s Park in the Championship in Scotland. But Chesterfield are a massive club, in terms of the fifth tier.

Promotion will be difficult. Only one side gets immediate promotion to League Two. Second and third go into the play-offs. Chesterfield have games in hand. McPake improves Chesterfield hugely – but the National League is beneath him.
