Barry Ferguson has told Go Radio that he expects Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos to leave Ibrox but thinks Michael Beale will start the controversial striker on Sunday afternoon at Hampden Park in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

Morelos, 26, has been criticised on a large scale this season. Not least, by Giovanni van Bronckhorst earlier this season. The ex-Gers manager says he was not picking the Colombia international due to issues over his fitness and attitude.

Beale has started Morelos in five of his six games in charge. In the one game he started on the bench, he replaced Antonio Colak at half-time – a 2-0 win over Dundee United, last time out. Morelos is out of contract at Ibrox in June.

Failing to hit the heights he previously has done, his weight issues are under the microscope. Derek Ferguson says that Morelos is “disrespecting” his teammates by not being fit enough. Beale has defended him, saying he has an injury.

Now, Rangers legend Ferguson has given his verdict of Morelos. He says that he expects the striker to start against Aberdeen in the semi-final on Sunday, and that Rangers are a better team with him in it. But, thinks Morelos will go.

“I can see him moving on but I think Morelos has to play [against Aberdeen in semi-final]. He is a certain starter on Sunday,” Ferguson told Go Radio. “I think with Morelos in the Rangers team, they do look a far better team.”

Morelos has got to start. Even if Colak is fit to start, and with Kemar Roofe back, Beale has got to start Morelos. Simply, as Ferguson correctly puts, that even if Morelos has a bad game – he dictates two opposition players. It opens space.

That allows the likes of Ryan Kent, Fashion Sakala, Malik Tillman or any other attacking midfielders who could start the game. But Ferguson is also right in predicting that the likelihood is, that Morelos could leave Rangers on a free deal.
