The Rangers midfielder is said to be surplus to requirements under new Ibrox boss Pedro Caixinha.

Scunthorpe United manager Graham Alexander has confirmed to BBC Radio Humberside that his side have made a bid to sign Rangers midfielder Matt Crooks on a permanent basis.

Crooks has only appeared three times for Rangers and spent the second half of last season on loan at Glanford Park, impressing with three goals in 12 Irons outings.

But according to Alexander, the 23-year-old remains surplus to requirements at Ibrox and the League One side are not alone in their pursuit of the Rangers man.

“We’ve spoken to Rangers and with Crooksy himself,” the former Scotland international explained during Thursday’s breakfast show. “One other club has bid for him as well, we’ll wait and see how that one pans out really.

“It’s dragged on for quite a while. We’re hopeful that we can get him on board if possible but it’s obviously down to Rangers and Matt himself.”

Despite not being fancied by new boss Pedro Caixinha, Alexander confirmed that the Scottish giants are still requesting a fee for Crooks, whom they signed from Accrington Stanley in 2016 alongside Josh Windass.

He added: “He’s not available on a free, no. I think that’s obviously the delay in the whole process, that they want a fee and it becomes a business transaction between clubs.”

Rangers have strengthened heavily in Crooks’ position this summer, bringing in Ryan Jack and Carlos Pena with Graham Dorrans set to follow.
