Kevin Kyle has told Open Goal that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is “miles off it” at the moment and was “surprised” to see him start for the Ibrox side at Hampden Park on Sunday – during Rangers’ semi-final 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

Morelos, 26, has started six of Michael Beale’s seven games since the Rangers boss returned, after his prior stint as first-team coach. The striker has managed just two goals and two assists in that time, struggling to show his best form.

The striker laid on an assist for Ryan Jack to equalise against Aberdeen on Sunday, before Kemar Roofe got the winner in extra-time. Morelos lasted 74 minutes, with Antonio Colak missing from the entire squad due to further injury.

Ex-Rangers striker laid into Morelos. Despite Beale stating time after time that Morelos is playing through an injury, Kyle said Morelos is “miles off it” and looks a shadow of his former self – the player that scored 29 goals in 19-20.

“I think Morelos is miles off it. I was surprised he went for Morelos. He’s there in spirit, but he’s not that Morelos that we had a few seasons ago,” Kyle told Open Goal when discussing Morelos, his recent form and that he started.

It was a frustrating performance from Morelos and while he did get an assist for Jack to equalise, he does look like a player struggling to be the man that had a hand in 39 goals in 19-20. His contract is up in June, which may be an issue.

Does Morelos stay? Does he continue to start under Beale? Or do Rangers bring in a replacement, and allow Morelos to leave either this summer of at the end of the current campaign. Derek Ferguson wants Celtic target Kevin Nisbet.
