Rangers want Todd Cantwell and Norwich City have now rejected a bid from a Championship rival for the playmaker.
That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim that a Championship club have come forward with an offer for Cantwell.
Norwich are open to selling Cantwell given that his contract expires at the end of the season, but the offer wasn’t good enough.
The Canaries are holding out for more cash, laying down the gauntlet to Rangers.
The Scottish Sun reported over the weekend that Rangers are interested in signing Cantwell.
Given that Rangers are a non-English club, they can strike a pre-contract agreement to sign Cantwell for free in the summer.
Yet with Norwich open to selling now, the Gers could pounce with a cut-price January move.

Rangers may need to be quick to sign Todd Cantwell
It’s rare that a club makes a first offer and then just gives up.
That opening offer is usually to test the water with another bid to come down the line.
Whoever made that bid for Cantwell is surely still in the race and planning to make another bid.
Still, this should be a warning to Rangers – if they wait too long to make their official move for Cantwell, they risk missing out.
The 24-year-old looked set to become a star in the Premier League and was courted by the top flight’s elite just a couple of years ago.
Cantwell has completely lost his way now and hasn’t registered a goal or assist in 18 Championship games this season.
New Norwich boss David Wagner even left Cantwell out of the squad to face Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, seemingly signalling the end of his Carrow Road career.
Rangers boss Michael Beale is a big fan of Cantwell and even called him ‘fantastic’ in light of the rumours.
The Gers are clearly interested and whilst this rejected bid gives them a window of opportunity, they need to make their move quickly.
