Rangers are keen on Todd Cantwell with Michael Beale including the Norwich City playmaker on his Ibrox transfer hit list.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who claim that Rangers are weighing up a move to sign Cantwell.

That could be a cash deal this month with Norwich potentially willing to cash in on the attacking midfielder.

Yet there is also the prospect of Rangers pushing for a pre-contract agreement, with Cantwell out of contract in the summer.

That would allow Cantwell to join Rangers for absolutely nothing at the end of the season in a bargain deal.

Alternatively, Rangers could secure that pre-contract deal as leverage for a January cash deal, as they did with Glen Kamara in 2019.

Beale and co have yet to decide when exactly to push for Cantwell’s signature but Rangers do appear to be keen on the Englishman.

Todd Cantwell would need to get back on track at Rangers

It doesn’t feel all that long ago that Cantwell was being hailed as a Premier League star.

Cantwell showed real promise in the 2019-20 campaign, bagging six goals and two assists in a relegated Norwich City side.

Many clubs were linked with signing him after that; Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were just two, with The Athletic even claiming that Liverpool were leading Manchester City and Manchester United in the race to sign him for £30million.

Fast forward two-and-a-half years and Cantwell isn’t even being linked with Premier League moves, this time it’s Rangers showing an interest.

Cantwell managed six goals and six assists to help Norwich win promotion in the 2020-21 season, continuing to show his talent.

Yet that’s when it all started going wrong as Cantwell made just five league starts for Norwich last season. Even a loan spell to Bournemouth didn’t help, as Cantwell started eight league games and failed to register a goal or assist.

It’s a similar story this term; nine starts, nine substitute appearances, no goals, no assists. Cantwell has looked like a shadow of his former self.

Cantwell is still only 24 though, so there is time to reignite the flame.

Hailed as an ‘exceptional’ talent by Celtic hero Chris Sutton, Cantwell needs a fresh start – and Rangers could provide him with one.
