Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted that it is a “great boost” to have captain James Tavernier back fit agains after injury – and hailed the club’s medical team after being given extra time to nurse Tav back to full fitness.

The captain returned in the midweek draw with St. Johnstone and is almost certain to start when the Gers take on the Perth side at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.

Gerrard confessed that the right-back could have returned earlier if necessary but with the league title already secured, he wanted to ensure Tavernier was back at his best before pitching him back into the side.

“It’s a great boost to have Tav get minutes and get through without injury, we are all delighted to have him back,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“He is big for us and his contribution this season has been mega. It is great to have him back.

“We have been patient with Tav and the medical team have been brilliant.

“We could have pushed him a little bit quicker but because the league was already won we could be patient and get him back to full fitness. James has played a massive part in us becoming champions.”
