Rangers are reportedly looking to bring a new defender to Ibrox.

Richard Keogh of Derby County tackled Liam Lindsay of Barnsley during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and Barnsley at iPro Stadium on May 6, 2018 in Derby, England.

Rangers are in the market for a new defender before the end of the transfer window, but fans have every right to be underwhelmed with the latest rumour.

The Gers have already added Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson to their defensive options this summer, but new manager Steven Gerrard hasn’t finished overhauling his back line yet.

With Bruno Alves and David Bates gone to Parma and Hamburg respectively, Russell Martin back at Norwich, Ross McCrorie moved into midfield and Fabio Cardoso surplus to requirements, Rangers still need depth behind Katic and Goldson.

The Express report that Gerrard particularly wants a left-footed defender, and having failed to secure a £3million deal for Millwall’s Jake Cooper, Bolton Wanderers defender Mark Beevers is thought to be the latest name on Gerrard’s radar.

Beevers, 28, would certainly be a lot cheaper than Cooper, but he isn’t the sort of signing to push Celtic any time soon, and a defender more in the mould of Cooper – in terms of potential as well as instant ability – should be targeted.

One name who fits the bill perfectly is Barnsley’s Liam Lindsay, who suffered relegation to League One at the end of last season, but is still one of Scotland’s most promising young defenders.

The 22-year-old has all the attributes Rangers are looking for; he’s tall at 6ft 3in tall, he’s left footed, he has experience in both England and Scotland and has major potential to develop under Gerrard.

Glasgow-born and a product of the Partick Thistle youth setup, Lindsay would surely come at a similar cost to Rangers’ bid for Cooper, and rather than go for a player who is unlikely to get any better in Beevers, they should be focusing their attentions on bringing Lindsay back to Scotland this summer.
