Rangers are in pole position to sign Umar Sadiq.

Rangers are keen on a move for Umar Sadiq, and his willingness to leave Roma sets them up well.

The Scottish Sun report Sadiq is the latest name on Steven Gerrard’s shortlist.

Leaving Roma is not a decision a player would take lightly, with the Italians reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

But Sadiq is not part of their plans, and he spent the second half of this season out on loan at NAC Breda.

Dutch outlet BN DeStem reported Sadiq enjoyed his loan spell in the Eredivisie and wanted to join the club permanently.

NAC Breda could not afford to do a deal with Roma and Rangers appear set to steal in and land the Nigerian’s signature.

The standard required to break through at Roma is simply too high for him right now, and that is not necessarily a negative assessment of his talent.

Sadiq needs to play regularly and he has a better chance to do so if he joins Rangers than if he stays put.

His decision already appears to be made up to move on, and for Rangers, that’s half the battle won.
