Rangers target McInnes almost replaced Celtic boss Rodgers

Rangers want Derek McInnes, who once almost followed in Brendan Rodgers’ footsteps.

Derek McInnes has been rumoured as Rangers top target for several weeks and last night the Ibrox side made their move.

Aberdeen confirmed on their official website they have rejected an approach for the manager.

While Aberdeen boss, McInnes has tried and failed to get one over Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers.

A switch to Rangers could provide him, and the Gers with more luck.

McInnes knows Rodgers well from his time in opposition, but he once came close to replacing him.

This was while McInnes was St Johnstone boss, his first managerial job.

McInnes took over at St Johnstone in 2007, and two years later was linked with replacing Brendan Rodgers at Watford.

Clubcall reported in 2009 that McInnes was a top target for Watford, and St Johnstone’s chairman Geoff Brown feared he would leave to ‘better himself’.

Rodgers had quit Watford to take over rivals Reading, a spell which turned out to be the worst of his managerial career to date.

McInnes stuck by St Johnstone, signing a new contract weeks later, and stayed at the club until 2011, BBC Sport reported.

Watford went onto appoint Malky Mackay instead, Scotland’s current caretaker manager.

Now McInnes is in line to go in direct opposition with Rodgers in Scotland’s biggest rivalry if Rangers are successful, and enjoy a bigger platform to finally show he is the better man.
