Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers reportedly want Connor Goldson at Ibrox, and Micky Mellon compares him to Manchester City’s John Stones.
Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon worked with reported Rangers target Goldson at Shrewsbury Town, and he has spoken highly of the Premier League defender.
Mellon has also compared Goldson to Manchester City centre-back John Stones, with whom he worked at Barnsley.
Stones, who earns £100,000 per week as salary according to The Daily Star, started his professional club football career at Barnsley before joining Everton in 2013 and then moving to City in the summer of 2016.
Mellon told The Daily Record: “Signing Connor Goldson would be a clever bit of recruitment by Steven Gerrard.
“There’s a lot of good young players underneath first-team level in the Premier League but few with Connor’s experience.
“I spoke to Connor a couple of days ago because he still rings me. And knowing the character and leader he is he is going there to improve and will meet the challenge of playing for Rangers head on.”
“John Stones was a player you could see right away would go right to the top and Connor is very similar although they have different strengths,” added Mellon. “They are good footballers. John was a lovely lad and a similar character to Connor.”
Quality defender
Goldson has not been able to make a huge impact at Brighton, but there is no doubt that the 25-year-old is a very good and capable defender.
Working with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will only make Goldson a better player, and he could prove to be a very good signing for Rangers.
