Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has left quite the impression on East Fife after the two sides met in the Scottish League Cup, The Scottish Sun report.

The veteran forward was on target against the League One side, taking a touch and surging past the defensive line before finishing smartly and sending the Gers on their way to a 3-0 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

For defender Chris Higgins it was a harsh lesson, but one he enjoyed and won’t forget quickly.

The former Queen Of The South man was left hugely impressed by the Rangers man.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “Playing against someone like Jermain Defoe, he is still as sharp as a tack. His movement is excellent and his touch and finish for his goal were excellent.

“He’s taken the pass into feet and nipped in front of Ross Dunlop and he’s that sharp. His touch around the corner has not broken his stride.

“I’m trying to get back across to block it but he’s a world-class finisher and when he gets into those areas he’s ruthless.”

What can Defoe achieve at Rangers this season?

When the Bournemouth loanee made the switch to Ibrox in January it certainly raised a few eyebrows. Some questioned whether he would be the latest in a long line of older and faded stars from England to regress badly at Rangers.

Defoe though appears to be of a different class to Joey Barton and the like.

His professionalism has been spot on and working under old England teammate Steven Gerrard, he has gone from strength to strength over the last eight months.

Having already scored six goals this term, he has the chance of scoring close to 20 goals by the end of the season, which would be an outstanding return from a 36-year-old.

Alfredo Morelos may be the main man at Ibrox, but in Defoe, Rangers have a superb rotation and substitute option.
