Can the Ibrox favourite transfer his Rangers to the international stage?
Having been included in an initial 40-man preliminary squad, Colombia boss Carlos Queiroz has now decided he’s worth a closer look when the players meet up later this month, giving Morelos the opportunity to earn more caps.
The 23-year-old has played three times for his country but has not been included in any squads since March, completely missing out on their Copa America campaign.
It’s a huge boost for the player after some exceptional form at club level this season.
He’s scored 13 goals and assisted four times in 17 appearances already, helping Rangers into the UEFA Europa League group stage and a League Cup semi-final.
Playing away to Young Boys on Thursday, he’ll be desperate to produce a top display and convince his national team boss he’s worthy of a start in the upcoming double header.
Rangers’ long-term transfer stance vindicated
If the Ibrox club were looking to make a quick buck on Morelos then he could have easily been sold in the summer transfer window.
Coming off of a red hot season in the Scottish top-flight, amidst question marks about his discipline and Colombia future, it could have been argued he was at his peak value.
The Daily Record reported in August that the Gers rejected a big money bid, said to be in excess of £10, from West Bromwich Albion for his services.
It has to be said, that transfer stance has so far been vindicated this season. Not only is he scoring with even more regularity and producing good performances at home and abroad, but is also back in the national team mix too.
More goals in the Europa League and caps for Colombia will only increase his value more, as well as push Rangers closer to their ambitions of silverware.
One day it’s likely he will depart Ibrox, but Rangers are clearly taking a long-term view on that and on the evidence so far, it could pay off massively.
