Morelos was booked at Tannadice but could now face more severe punishment
Alfredo Morelos could be punished for an apparent elbow after the SFA confirmed they’ve issued a notice of complaint.
The Rangers striker was booked by referee Steven McLean at Tannadice on Sunday after appearing to catch Dundee United defender Mark Connolly with an elbow, but many onlookers believed the punishment should have been more severe.
Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd said the Colombian was “very, very lucky” to remain on the pitch, while co-commentator Ally McCoist said: “It’s crazy, it’s absolutely crazy.
“It could’ve been a red, it could’ve been.”
The 24-year-old will now be the subject of a disciplinary hearing on Thursday, and faces a charge of violent conduct. That would leave Morelos facing a suspension as Rangers aim to maintain their 13-point lead at the top of the Premiership table.
Details of the fast track notice of complaint were confirmed on the SFA’s website, which reads: “Disciplinary Rule allegedly breached: Disciplinary Rule 200: Where any one of the sending off offences of (A1) serious foul play, (A2) violent conduct, and (A3) spitting at an opponent or any other person is committed by a player at a match, but that sending off offence was not seen by any of the match officials at the time that it was committed, the mandatory suspension for that sending off offence as provided for in Annex C of the Judicial Panel Protocol shall be applied to the player.
“Any Fast Track Notice of Complaint alleging a breach of this Rule shall be Determined by a Fast Track Tribunal subject to the provisions of Section 13.”
Morelos remained on the pitch following the 12th-minute flashpoint, but endured a difficult afternoon as he passed up a number of goalscoring opportunities. Rangers secured all three points, however, thanks to goals from James Tavernier and Connor Goldson.
Despite finding the net four times in eight Europa League matches, Morelos has failed to maintain his goalscoring form of previous seasons in domestic football and has scored just three goals in 12 Premiership games this season.
Rangers return to action on Wednesday night when they face St Mirren at the Simple Digital Arena in the Betfred Cup quarter-final.
