Rangers’ Steven Gerrard provides injury update on Arfield and McAuley

Glasgow Rangers were knocked off top spot in the Scottish Premiership, with the Ibrox side drawing their latest clash 0-0.

Steven Gerrard told BT Sport’s live post-match coverage of Rangers’ draw with Hibernian (19/12 from 19:15) that Scott Arfield will miss the Gers’ next game, and hinted that Gareth McAuley looks set to join him on the sidelines.

The Light Blues have been knocked off top spot in the Scottish Premiership after drawing 0-0 at Easter Road. Gerrard’s men dominated the game and had the chances to take the three points, but poor finishing and some superb goalkeeping meant that they were left hugely frustrated.

Another reason Gerrard is unlikely to be pleased is the injuries that his side picked up. Arfield was replaced at the break while McAuley came off for Joe Worrall shortly after the hour-mark.

And after the game, Gerrard suggested that he is not expecting either man to be available to play against St Johnstone at the weekend.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Scott Arfield won’t be available for Sunday but we’ll check his injury out and see what the damage is,” he told BT Sport.

“I’m not sure on Gareth just yet but yeah, that’s the only disappointing thing from the night really. Obviously, the two points dropped but we’ve probably lost a couple of bodies as well.”

Losing McAuley looks to be a big blow for Rangers. His partnership with Connor Goldson is developing, and they have arguably looked better alongside each other than Goldson has with any of the other centre-backs.

Meanwhile, Arfield has the quality to provide a moment of brilliance against any team in the division. Despite some inconsistent form at times, it is a major loss if he is indeed out of the weekend’s game, especially with back-to-back home fixtures against Hibs and Celtic to end the year shortly after.
