Rangers produced one of the biggest results in recent Scottish history, knocking Borussia Dortmund out of the Europa League – and Steven Gerrard loved it.

The Gers were already in a commanding position having won the first leg in Germany 4-2 last week, producing a stunning display.

This had the potential to be a famous European night under the lights at Ibrox. Rangers lived up to the occasion.

Ryan Kent won a first-half penalty which James Tavernier converted, but goals from Jude Bellingham and Donyell Malen threatened to rattle Rangers.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men didn’t back down after the break though and fired themselves level on the night with Tavernier scoring again.

There was to be no comeback from Dortmund, with Rangers now through to the last 16 in a huge result for Scottish football.

All connected to Rangers have been celebrating this win wildly, and even a couple of men who left Rangers recently.

Former Gers boss Steven Gerrard, now with Aston Villa after a November move, took to Instagram to share his praise.

Gerrard simply said ‘congratulations’ to Rangers, taking the time to send a message to his former club.

Everton defender Nathan Patterson also shared a message having left Rangers for the Toffees in the January transfer window.

Patterson still has Rangers close to his heart and took to Instagram to state ‘what a result’ having seen his former competition Tavernier stela the show.

Both men will believe they made the right decisions in leaving Rangers for the Premier League, but may feel a little more than just a tinge of regret at missing out on such an amazing night at Ibrox.

Rangers will now hope for more nights like this going forward, with a real chance of a Europa League run now possible.
