Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hailed veteran keeper Allan McGregor after he saved Odsonne Edouard’s penalty in the Scottish Cup win over Celtic at Ibrox – insisting referee Bobby Madden should never have pointed to the spot to begin with.
The Hoops were awarded the spot-kick with eleven minutes left after Leigh Griffiths went down, but McGregor recorded yet another Old Firm penalty save to deny the Parkhead side and keep another clean sheet.
With Gerrard now a veteran of Old Firm games, the Gers boss doesn’t think the spot kick awarded by Madden is the type of decision teams get in those games, calling it “really soft.”
Steven Davis’ overhead kick and a Jonjoe Kenny own goal had the Gers comfortable, and Gerrard was pleased his “big players turned up” as he now turns his attention to the double header against St. Johnstone in the league and Cup.
“Without a doubt the big players turned up (but) there shouldn’t have been a penalty,” Gerrard told Premier Sports after the 2-0 win.
“I thought the penalty was really soft.
“From Bobby’s view I find it hard (to see) how he’s given that penalty.
“Again Allan McGregor’s come big for us and pulled one out but I thought it was a real soft penalty.
“In a derby, in an Old Firm, normally you don’t get those decisions.”
