Steven Davis has admitted to The Record that he didn’t know he was a Rangers player for his side’s last victory away to Celtic.

Both Old Firm rivals renew the hostilities this week when Steven Gerrard’s Gers visit Parkhead.

Rangers won the last meeting with Celtic – a 1-0 win at Ibrox in December – but it’s been nearly nine years since the light Blues last beat the Hoops away from home.

Davis, during his first stint, was on the pitch that day in October 2010 – something that the Rangers midfielder admits surprised him to learn.

The Northern Irishman, who re-signed for the Glasgow giants on loan in January, told The Record, when reminded that he played: “I didn’t know that. You are making me feel old! But I remember it, yeah. You always do because they are always special games to be involved with.

“The teams were always quite evenly matched over the course of the years but recently Celtic have dominated, so the onus is on us to try to close that gap.

“Obviously, this will be my first one in my second spell back at the club, so it’s one I’m really looking forward to. Hopefully, we can stamp our authority and get the right result for the fans.”

Rangers are underdogs to end that lengthy barren run this weekend, with Celtic 10 points ahead of Gerrard’s troops in the Scottish Premiership table.

But the Bhoys, now under Neil Lennon, have a number of injury concerns – including Mikael Lustig, Kieran Tierney and Dedryck Boyata – so it could be an ideal time for the Gers to strike.
