Rangers could be without a key man for Saturday’s derby
Rangers could be handed a significant injury blow ahead of Saturday’s crucial derby.
Scott Arfield was taken off with an ankle injury just six minutes after coming on in the 1-0 win over Hibs at Ibrox on Saturday, and now faces the prospect of missing out against Celtic.
The midfielder is definitely out of Rangers’ final match of 2020, with St Mirren the opponents in Paisley on Wednesday night.
Assistant manager Gary McAllister explained that securing a scan for Arfield was harder than usual due to the time of year.
As quoted in Record Sport, McAllister said: “It is obviously difficult to find a facility to get a scan for Scotty but he is en route as we speak. We’re just waiting for the results to come back.
“It’s quite rare to see Scotty lie down on a pitch and be carried off as he’s generally very robust, so it was pretty disappointing to see him come off the pitch the way he did.
“But we’re hopeful that the scan will show up better than how it first looked.
“We’ll wait purely for the results of the scan (before deciding how long he will be out). That’s the position we’re in.”
Arfield has made 31 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side so far this season, scoring seven goals.
The league leaders hope to avenge the shock 3-2 Betfred Cup defeat they suffered against St Mirren earlier this month when the teams meet at the same venue.
Gerrard’s men have responded to that setback with wins against Motherwell, St Johnstone and Hibs.
