Rangers defender Borna Barisic is optimistic about Croatia’s chances against Spain in the last 16 of the Euro 2020, with the Ibrox star calling the fixture a “double-edged sword” for the Spanish.

After returning to action in the final group D victory over Scotland at Hampden, the Rangers defender could come back into the starting XI for the clash with Spain in Copenhagen next week.

Despite being World Cup finalists three years ago, Croatia are big underdogs against Spain but the Rangers left-back thinks the meeting between the two sides will be an “interesting” clash given how both “love” to have possession of the ball.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” Barisic said, as translated by UEFA.

“When you’re not favourites, you’re more relaxed, but your opponent should theoretically be stronger than you.

“But I’m an optimist, I have no doubt about our quality, we have shown it countless times. They like to have possession, and we love it too…It will be interesting.”

After missing the opening two games through injury, Barisic’s fitness will have been a big concern for Rangers ahead of a massive season.

The Croatian was a massive player in the Gers’ romp to the Scottish Premiership title as they lifted the title for the first time in a decade.

A return to the starting XI for the Spain clash would be another big boost ahead of Rangers’ return to training and the looming Champions League qualifiers.

The Rangers defender and his teammates took confidence from their win over Scotland but Barisic knows the tie with Spain will be a much tougher task, adding: “The Scotland win gave us confidence, enthusiasm and a motivation – but that game is in the past now. We have to prepare for the next game, it will definitely be a tougher game.”
