Rangers player/coach Jermain Defoe has admitted that the chance to “give back” after a lengthy playing career and help guide the next generation of Ibrox striker is “special” after combining his playing duties with a role as part of Steven Gerrard’s coaching team this season.

The veteran signed a one-year extension at Ibrox over the summer and confessed he’s always thought about his eventual transition into coaching once he’d finished playing.

Defoe also admitted he would like to get the chance to work with the Gers’ kids and coach the Academy sides, calling his decision to combine playing and coaching an “easy” one.

“It is always something I have thought about,” Defoe told Rangers TV.

“It is stuff I have enjoyed doing and to give back the experience I have got gives me a good feeling.

“When you love football like I do, something like this is special.”

“It is something we spoke about over the summer, myself, the manager, the staff and director of football and when the opportunity came to me, it was an easy decision.

“I would love the opportunity to go over to the other side and do a bit with the younger lads as well – that next generation which would be good and give me a good feeling, so I am looking forward to that as well.”

Defoe will still have an important role for Rangers this season as they look to defend their Scottish Premiership title and secure a place in the Champions League group stage.

While he may not play regularly, his goals were vital last season and he’ll be expected to contribute a few more again this term in the Gers’ quest for 56.
