Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier was subject of a shock link to Everton at the weekend.

The Sunday Mirror report Tavernier is being lined up by Swansea City, Burnley and the Toffees.

Tavernier has had a mixed spell with Rangers since signing under Mark Warburton, captaining the club but also leading the team in repeatedly shambolic defeats against Celtic.

James Tavernier of Rangers scores a penalty during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The full-back was exposed at the weekend in Rangers 5-0 loss to Celtic and it was a display which highlighted his shortcomings.

Is he good enough for Everton?

He is certainly not capable of displacing the defenders already on Everton’s books.

Everton already have Ireland international Seamus Coleman, recently returned from injury and looking like getting back to his best.

The Toffees also have England under-20 World Cup winner Jonjoe Kenny, while even third choice Cuco Martina could also be an upgrade on Tavernier.

At Swansea City the Rangers ace would also struggle to displace defender Kyle Naughton.

Burnley’s defence also has Phil Bardsley and Matthew Lowton as regulars. Tavernier could not expect to be first choice.

It might well be time for Tavernier to take on a fresh challenge away from Rangers, but the three suggested Premier League destinations do not stack up.
