Former Romanian international Ilie Dumitrescu has tipped Rangers star Ianis Hagi to one day win a transfer to the Premier League despite not playing a single minute of football since January due to injury.

Speaking to ProSport, the former West Ham and Tottenham winger made the bold claim that the 24-year-old attacking midfielder has the quality to play in the Premier League, that is regardless of the fact that Hagi’s development has been severely hampered in recent months due to a knee injury.

Hagi picked up a problem in the Scottish Cup against League Two side Stirling Albion in January, and since going under the knife to have knee surgery, the Romanian international has been out on the sidelines, with the attacker set to return in 2023 after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the injury, Hagi was subject to plenty of interest from clubs over the summer, with Sport.Ro reporting that Galatasaray made a £6m bid to sign the Rangers star, with the playmaker’s father, Gheorghe Hagi, a legend for the Turkish giants.

Indeed, Hagi has the quality to one day make the move to a bigger club, and according to Dumitrescu, the Rangers star has already proven that he could do a job in a division as big as the Premier League based on his achievements in the Scottish Premiership with the Glasgow giants.

Dumitrescu said when asked about Hagi’s potential: “He can play in any league. If he can play in Scotland, he can do it in the Premier League without any problem. He is an indisputable leader. Ianis and I talk a lot, he is very strong mentally, he will be even stronger. He works very hard.”

Hagi’s long-term injury has been a major cause of frustration for Rangers supporters over the months. Yet with a return on the cards, the Romanian international is seemingly not far from making his awaited comeback to football, and the playmaker could win himself a transfer in 2023 if he performs.

After all, Hagi has proven he has the quality and the potential to become a superstar in the game, just like his father. And whilst the Premier League might seem like a stretch, it’s hardly the craziest prediction for the Romanian star if he can hit the ground running again next year post-injury.
