Alves left Rangers this summer to join Italian outfit Parma.
Bruno Alves made his competitive debut for Serie A side Parma on Sunday as he captained the newly-promoted side to a 2-2 draw against Udinese. Fabio Cardoso and Rangers winger Daniel Candeias reacted on Instagram to his display.
The 36-year-old was told by Steven Gerrard that he would not be a part of his plans this season, after he returned from the World Cup with Portugal. It means Alves decided to leave Rangers on a free, and was immediately snapped up by Parma.
The Euro 2016 winner struggled to hit the heights expected of him at Rangers after being signed by Pedro Caixinha, with a number of the manager’s signings proving to be flops – Eduardo Herrera, Dalcio and Carlos Pena to name a few.
Alves was perhaps slightly better than that list of players, but he only managed 25 appearances during the entire campaign. Posting on Instagram after his debut, Cardoso and Candeias replied by praising the defender.
Candeias’ comment is translated as: “My brother. You play for a top side,”, while Cardoso said: “Force my brother. Great man on and off the field.” Cardoso has also since left Ibrox, joining Portuguese side Santa Fe.
Alves has since been replaced by Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic under Gerrard, with the Gers remaining unbeaten in nine games. Gerrard will be desperate to make that 11 this week.
They play host to Russian side FC Ufa in the Europa League play-off round, before travelling to Fir Park to face Stephen Robinson’s Motherwell.
