Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor took the choice last week to announce his retirement from international football.

McGregor, 37, wants to prolong what is left of his club career by focusing on his spell with Rangers.

The prospect of a midweek match away in Kazakhstan may have forced his hand, and McGregor was missed.

Scotland lost 3-0 in Astana, getting their Euro 2020 qualification campaign off to the worst possible start.

McGregor’s absence was felt, with replacement Scott Bain of Celtic conceding twice in the first 10 minutes.

It looks like McGregor has played a blinder.

Scotland’s limp performance only serves to reinforce the Rangers’ star’s reputation.

He is also resting up ahead of the Old Firm game on March 31.

He will be mentally and physically fresh, while Celtic stopper Bain now will have this humiliation on his mind.

Scotland might be begging for McGregor to reconsider his decision at this rate.
