Glasgow Rangers had been in talks with Skrtel’s agent but the player has not joined the Ibrox side, opting instead for a move to Italy.

A player that Glasgow Rangers had been in talks to sign this summer has decided on his future as Martin Skrtel has joined Serie A side Atalanta on a free transfer (BBC Sport), ending speculation linking him to the Ibrox club.
The Slovakian defender played alongside Rangers boss Steven Gerrard at Liverpool before leaving Anfield in 2016 after nine years on their books, linking up with Turkish side Fenerbahce.
This summer, Skrtel – a four-time Slovakian Player of the Year who has played almost 600 professional games in his career – left the Istanbul outfit and, according to a report in Fotomac, Rangers were close to securing his services.
The 6ft 3in ace himself said last month, as quoted in The Daily Record, that the Light Blues had held talks with his agent regarding his client’s services, but in the end the player has opted to join the Nerazzurri, who are set to play in the Champions League after finishing third in Serie A last term.
Admittedly, Rangers already have a number of central defenders in their ranks, with the signings of Filip Helander and George Edmundson supplementing Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic at the back, so there probably wouldn’t have been much of a need for him in that case.
