Rangers defender Jack Simpson could find himself thrown into Sunday’s Old Firm clash after Fil Helander picked up a knock in the Scottish Cup defeat by St. Johnstone in midweek – but the man who discovered the 24-year-old’s talents while at Weymouth thinks the 24-year-old would be fine if pitched in against Celtic.
Simpson has been limited to only four appearances for the Gers so far since his deadline day move from Bournemouth, making a late cameo from the bench in place of Helander in midweek.
With the Swede a doubt and Leon Balogun also looking likely to miss the final Old Firm of the season, Tim Davis is confident Simpson can shine at Ibrox on Sunday.
“Character-wise, he is really laid-back,” Davis told the Scottish Daily Mail (Print edition April 30, p93).
“Nothing really fazes him. He is a really level-headed lad. He has marked Sergio Aguero. I think he would be fine. Plus, it’s a huge bonus he would have a really experienced lad in Goldson beside him to help him through.

“It’s just a pity there won’t be 50,000 people screaming him on at Ibrox on Sundat. On the other hand, I suppose not having the fans there takes a bit of the pressure off.”
With Steven Gerrard due to speak to the media later today, it will be much clearer if Simpson is going to be thrown in against the Parkhead side on Sunday.
After disappointing results in their previous two outings, Rangers will be desperate to get back to winning ways against Celtic and take another big step towards recording an unbeaten league season.
