Scottish Premiership side Hibs reportedly want to raid Steven Gerrard’s Rangers for Shrewsbury Town loanee Greg Docherty.
Strengthening a direct league rival is never a good idea. And Rangers should not overlook the fact that Hibernian could be battling them for a place in Europe next season with Greg Docherty attracting interest from Easter Road.
According to the Scottish Sun, Hibs are keen to sign a player Rangers bought from Hamilton in January 2018 for a fee of £650,000.
Hibernian’s recruitment chief, Graeme Mathie, has scouted Docherty on a number of occasions during an outstanding loan spell at Shrewsbury Town this season and he will surely have been impressed.
Docherty has scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists during his time in the third tier of English football. But with Steven Davis and Glen Kamara both arriving at Ibrox in January, it remains to be seen whether he has any future in a Rangers side who already boast a wide array of talented midfielders.
Selling Docherty to Hibs, however, does not sound like the greatest idea.
The Gers have already been left red-faced by Aberdeen youngster Lewis Ferguson, who they released in 2013, and the last thing they need is to be outclassed by another former Ibrox talent in the near future.
It’s a no-brainer really. Either keep Docherty and give him the chance he deserves or sell him to an English club, where he cannot come back to haunt them.
