Rangers are negotiating to bring Dominic Solanke to Ibrox.
New boss Steven Gerrard is hopeful of persuading Solanke to switch to Ibrox and sign with Rangers on loan for the season.
It is a deal which could be fantastic for Rangers, with Solanke regarded as one of world football’s brightest talents, finishing as top scorer at last season’s under-20 World Cup.
There are similarities between Solanke and Celtic talent Moussa Dembele, who joined the club at just 19-years-old.
Solanke is just 20, and like Dembele, he is just beginning to blossom in competitive football.
Dembele had more goals and starts when he joined, but these came for Championship side Fulham.
Solanke is playing for Liverpool at a higher level, netting his first goal this past weekend, and he has Champions League football under his belt as well as a full season on loan in Holland with Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie.
The time is right for him to take a next step, and for Dembele, moving to Scotland came at exactly the right time.
He has established himself as the club’s main striker and scored more than 40 goals in two seasons for the club.
Joining Celtic was the best move he could have made and it has raised his profile considerably, setting him up for further success.
The one downside for Rangers would be that signing Solanke would only be a loan deal.
Liverpool have high hopes for him and will not let him leave permanently, certainly if he performs well.
For Rangers and Solanke it is a gamble worth taking, and it can have the same upside as Celtic signing Dembele, but it can only be short lived and there is no big money sale waiting at the end of the line.
