Glasgow Rangers brought Scott Arfield to Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer, and he is really starting to find his feet.

Amongst the biggest statements that Steven Gerrard managed to make during his first window as Rangers boss was the deal that saw Scott Arfield join the Gers on a free transfer following the end of his contract at Burnley.

Arfield had not exactly been playing regularly for the Clarets during his final year at Turf Moor, but it still appeared to be a fantastic piece of business and statement of intent from Rangers given that Sean Dyche’s men could also offer European football had he stuck around.

Unfortunately, Arfield’s start to life with the Gers was probably not quite as impressive as he would have hoped. He had not scored for the side before their trip to Spain to face Villarreal and had arguably been overshadowed by some of their other signings in the middle of the park. He was not poor by any means, but his displays did not capture the imagination either.

But Arfield appears to have turned a corner, and now seems to be well on his way to proving to be the sensational signing that many Rangers supporters expected him to be when he arrived in the summer.

The Canada international has now scored three goals in his last fives games – including one in the 3-1 weekend win – and no player boasts more assists in the Scottish Premiership than the three that Arfield has so far provided.

He was expected to take little time to establish himself as a key player in Gerrard’s side. And while that process may have taken a little longer, there is surely no question after his latest run of performances that he is well on his way to becoming a massive part of the team.

And when you consider that he arrived on a free transfer, it would be no surprise if within a few months, Rangers fans struggle to think of many better deals in recent years.
